OMIOCNC Machine Grounding Guide – Why & How to Ground Your CNC Router

Why Grounding?

We recommend that all users ground their OMIOCNC machine. Without proper grounding, the probe (e.g., tool setter) may fail to work correctly in certain environments, or you may encounter unexplainable abnormal behavior.

Note: If your machine operates normally without grounding (for example, the tool setting function works correctly and no anomalies appear), you may skip grounding temporarily. However, we recommend completing the grounding as soon as conditions permit to ensure long-term stable operation.

How to Ground Your Machine

Follow these steps to properly ground your CNC router:

  1. Prepare the material.
Obtain a sufficiently long copper-core cable (cross-section area of at least 2.5 mm² is recommended).
  2. Connect to the machine.
Attach one end of the copper wire to the underside of the machine worktable, or to any metal screw on the table. Make sure............

How to Manage CNC Router Chips and Debris Without a Central Dust Collection System

Why Not to Connect a Standard Vacuum to Your CNC Router

Over the years, many OMIOCNC users have asked whether they can connect a household vacuum cleaner to their desktop CNC router for dust and chip removal. While this seems like a convenient idea, we do not supply parts for such a connection — and here is why.

Reason 1: Insufficient Suction Power

A typical home vacuum cleaner lacks the suction needed to effectively remove debris during routing. Only a dedicated high-power woodworking vacuum (often called a “dust collector”) has enough airflow to capture wood chips as they are produced. Even then, it can only handle lightweight wood dust — it cannot reliably pick up metal chips or heavier particles. Using an undersized vacuum will quickly clog the hose and reduce cutting performance.

Reason 2: Unbearable Noise Levels

Woodworking vacuums are extremely loud. A machining session may last anywhere from tens of minutes to several hours. Running a high-decibel vacuum continuously creates noise that is not only unpleasant for you but also likely to disturb your neighbors — unless you have a separate, well-Soundproofing............

Common Failures and Troubleshooting Steps of Linear Shaft Guides

Linear shaft guides commonly suffer from abnormal noise, sticky movement, excessive clearance, rust, scratches, overheating, and machining inaccuracy. Follow these 5 troubleshooting steps:

  • Visual inspection for rust, scratches, and debris.
  • Manual sliding test to feel resistance or wobble.
  • Professional cleaning with compressed air and lint‑free cloth.
  • Lubrication test with low‑viscosity oil.
  • Power‑on operation verification at low speed.

Maintenance for Linear Shaft Guides and Bearings

  1. After cleaning the linear guides, apply liquid‑type bearing lubricating oil to the linear guides, then run the axes back and forth for lubrication. There is no need to remove the bearings.
  2. You may purchase replacement spare parts from us when the bearings are damaged.
  3. Blow off cutting dust from the machine with compressed air after every use. Depending on operating frequency, apply lubricating oil (ordinary clear, low‑viscosity liquid lubricant) to the linear guides and screw rod every two weeks or every month.

Maintenance

1. Water cooled spindle
If your machine uses a water-cooled spindle, you should ensure to clean the water and the pump. The water cooled spindle must absolutely be used with water. The cooling water temperature should be < 35 degrees, it’s advised to check the water temperature during processing to prevent high temperature to lead to spindle overheating.

2. Keep clean
After each use of the machine, be sure to clean the dust on the platform and drive unit. Use compressed air to blow dust out of the control box (Do not use brushes or any other tools which could produce electrostatic electricity), check the screws of the wire plugs to ensure an optimal contact.

3. Lubrication weekly
Lubricate the rails and ball screws weekly with special grease for rails. If you do not have access to it in you local market, you can use high-speed bearing grease (lithium grease, white, suitable temperature: -20 °C ~ 120 °C).

4. Idling
If you plan on not using the machine for a long time............

About Grounding

About Grounding:

About cooling water

About cooling water:

  1. The volume of the cooling water tank should be greater than 20L.
  2. You can use a plastic container(barrels) with a lid. Prevent dust falling into the water.
  3. The cooling water temperature should be controlled below 35 degrees Celsius. Use a large capacity water tank can effectively reduce the water temperature.
  4. You can use purified water or tap water as cooling water.
  5. You can add 1% ~ 3% liquid rust to the cooling water (liquid rust for automobile water tank can be used).
  6. The water pump must be completely submerged in the water.

Maintenance of the water-cooled spindle

For a water-cooled spindle, we need to use correct ways to maintain it.
1. The cooling water, you can choose either tap water or deionized water. Please add a little common antirust into water ( the kind used in water tank of cars is OK).

2. You need to ensure that the spindle runs normally, so that you must avoid the water-cooled spindle lacks water. During operation, please check the surface temperature of the spindle regularly to prevent from a hot spindle.

3. Please measure the temperature of the cooling water periodically, you’d better keep the cooling water within 30 degree centigrade. When the environment temperature is high ( in summer), please use a big-size water tank. When the temperature of the cooling water is rising, you can lower the temperature by adding more water.

4. If you use tap water, please change the water periodically ( change one time in a week)

5. When the temperature in winter is below 5 degree centigrade, please add some anti-freezing solution into the cooling water.

6. If you don’t use the machine for a long time, you must use compressed air to blow out the water in the spindle until there is no water in it............
